What is BMR?
BMR, or Basal Metabolic Rate, is the amount of calories a typical human burns while at rest.
In other words, your BMR is how many calories you burn just by being alive! Bodily functions such as the heart pumping blood or lungs circulating oxygen require energy. Energy for the body is in the form of calories. The BMR is a measure of how many calories you burn by "keeping yourself alive" when your bodily functions are running.
When trying to lose weight or exercise, many people do not consider the weight loss implications of their BMR. Many people assume they can only eat as many calories as they exercise in order to lose weight, but this is not true. You must include your BMR calories in any weight loss calculations you make.
When dieting, on a diet, or trying to exercise more to lose weight, it is very important that you eat enough calories to satisfy your BMR. Eating less calories than your BMR may cause your body to go into 'starvation' mode. This will cause your metabolism to slow down and your body to retain more calories and fat.
BMR is a calculation of the minimumnumber of calories that your body needs in order to meet basic life functions, like blood and oxygen circulation, and production of digestive enzymes.
BMR is a scientific formula, based on your sex, height, weight, and other factors.
Always consult a diet or weight loss professional before trying to lose weight or exercise.
